Right now am absolutely thrilled to have won the 2013 EMMA (Exceptional Merit in Media Award) from the National Women's Political Caucus for newspaper journalism, an op ed in the LA Times about how unconscious biases keep women and minorities out of top positions in so many fields. I spent more than 10 years at the Times covering science before coming to USC's Annenberg School, where I also teach Critical Thinking and put on a variety of art/science/politics events. I've written for the New York Times and Wash Post as well (and Newsday), plus magazines ranging from People to the New Yorker (and most in between). Been an editor at Discover, twice, and recently published my 8th nonfiction book in paperback and, finally, an ebook! Something Incredibly Wonderful Happens: Frank Oppenheimer and His Astonishing Exploratorium. I'll be recruiting at JAWS for some exciting opportunities with our Specialized Journalism grad program: JAWS president Lauren Whaley was one of my first students in that program, and I'm SO proud.
