Feminism and Journalism 50 Years After ‘The Feminine Mystique’
As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Feminine Mystique, we want to explore how feminism is relevant to journalism in 2013. We have won many battles, thanks to the sacrifices of many women. And yet, according to the most recent report by the Women's Media Center, the numbers lag in terms of women in leadership, the number of female bylines in major media, the number of female sources in stories, and the number of females on op-ed pages and as commentators in broadcast media. So is feminism still the best answer for addressing these issues? Is it still as relevant for young female journalists as it was for the women who paved the way for the rest of us? If so, what does feminism offer for today's young journalists? How is it different from the earlier days of the women's movement?
